Various Field Recordings
This part of the site contains various recordings made by Eli Smith in his travels and travails. These are either field recordings made informally or recordings of live concerts:
Jalopy Theater – Redhook Brooklyn, 2/20/08:
Peter Stampfel, Pat Conte, Sam Shepard and Citizen Kafka perform live at Roots ‘n’ Ruckus at the Jalopy Theater. (photo by Eli Smith)
This is a recording of the Roots ‘n’ Ruckus show (click here to listen), which takes place every wednesday at the Jalopy Theater in Redhook Brooklyn. This particular show had special guests! – Playing together were Peter Stampfel (of the Holy Modal Rounders and Fugs), Sam Shepard (the playwright and actor), Pat Conte (Otis Brothers, Secret Museum of Mankind) and Citizen Kafka. The show also featured Dom Flemmons (of the Carolina Chocolate Drops) and many of the Roots ‘n’ Ruckus regulars: Down Home’s own Eli Smith (hope you enjoy my set!), Feral Foster, Jessy Carolina and Hubby Jenkins. This is a long show, running more than 2.5 hours. Peter, Sam, etc’s set starts at 31:00 minutes. The order of performance in the whole thing is as follows: Eli Smith (beginning); Feral Foster and Jessy Carolina (16:30); Peter, Sam, Pat & Citizen (31:00); Dom Flemmons (77:30); Feral Foster (123:00); Hubby Jenkins with Dom Flemmons (134:00).
“A” Train stopped in a subway tunnel in Brooklyn – NYC 2/5/08:
This is a recording of an older African-American guy, missing many of his teeth, wearing a black cowboy hat and boots who played an electric guitar through a phaser. He was walking through the subway cars playing songs. Click here for his version of “People Get Ready.” Its great. I recorded him with a tiny digital voice recorder I carry around.
Anthology Film Archives – New York City 12/8/07:
This show was after a screening of the film “Bound to Lose” which is a GREAT documentary about The Holy Modal Rounders. “The End of the World Banjo Band”is a current project by Peter Stampfel of The Holy Modal Rounders. Its an all banjo band featuring Peter Stampfel, John Cohen (of the New Lost City Ramblers), Jeannie Scofield, Walker Shepard and Down Home Radio’s own Eli Smith. Faced with the end of the world, seemingly the only option is actually to create an all-banjo-band. The band has 5-string banjos, banjo-mandolin, and 6-string banjo-guitar.
PA’s Lounge- Somerville (Boston), MA 12/9/07:
This show included Frank Hoier, Feral Foster & Elizabeth Butters. Frank, Feral and myself are part of the Roots n Ruckus music collective that is happening here in New York. Elizabeth resides in Boston.
